Today in Mr. Schick’s western civilization class, we continued the power point on the ancient civilization of Greece. We learned that around 1200 BC, mysterious “sea people” began to invade Mycenaea and burnt multiple palaces. The Dorians moved into the burnt down city and dominated from 1150 BC to 750 BC. The Dorians were far less advanced than the Mycenaeans which led to them completely abandoning reading and writing for 400 years. This time period was called the Greek “dark ages” and nobody knows what happened then. A blind man named Homer told verbal stories of the Trojan war from 750 BC to 700 BC. These stories (epics) were called The Iliad and The Odyssey. The Iliad is possibly one of the last conquests of the Mycenaeans in the Trojan War and The Odyssey is a story about how Odysseus attempts to return home after the Trojan War and involves him being thwarted by the angry god of the sea, Poseidon.

Today in Mr. Schick's Western Civilization class, we finished the power point on the Renaissance that he had prepared for us. We talked about the arts and went over which information was important and which were test questions. The first test question is that renaissance means rebirth. The Renaissance was a rebirth of art and literature and culture. The next was that Milan and Florence had wealthy merchants and bankers. The third was that the Medici were a powerful banking family and that they paid writers, artists, and musicians to create their beautiful works of arts. The super-patron Isabella d'Este was a patron to: da Vinci, Bellini, Corraggio, Raphael, and Michelangelo. There were many more test questions but we also learned about the printing press and the Sistine Chapel that Michelangelo had painted in the Vatican.

Utopia - Greek for "no place" and stands fro the ideal place William Shakespeare - regarded him as the greatest playwright of all time by many Johann Gutenberg - a craftsman from Mainz, Germany, who advanced the printing press 3. he studied in italy then started working on woodcuts and engravings which were focused on religion and realism which then influenced more German artists 4. it spread the idea of humanism and put an emphasis on realism and secular views which even influenced christians 5. it allowed for books to be produced much quicker than writing them out and allowed for the mass spread of ideas and thoughts
